What is Central Air Conditioner Energy Efficiency?
In able to reduce wasted energy, the U.S. Department of Energy has established minimum efficiency standards for central air conditioning systems. Every unit is given an efficiency rating, called a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating). This is listed on the yellow Energy Guide label posted on each unit. It is very important to look at these ratings carefully. The higher the number, the more efficient the unit and the lower the cost to provide a given amount of cooling. Also, the minimum SEER rating for new central air conditioners is 13. The most efficient models have SEER ratings of between 15 to 20. When buying, watch the terminology. "High efficiency" models are actually those that meet the minimum SEER standard of 13. |

My furnace is not working correctly. What can I do before calling a professional?
There are many trouble-shooting tests that you can do before you call an air conditioning and heating professional. If you are still having problems with your heating and cooling system, you can have confidence that our technicians at Montgomery HVAC Service Company, LLC will promptly be at your service.
To begin with, make sure you have power to your furnace: in the lower portion of the furnace you’ll see a small sight glass. It will be round and about 2 inches in diameter. Check and see if you can see two lights flashing. If you can see these lights, then you know you at least have power to the furnace.
Second, listen to the furnace while it’s running. Do you hear any unusual noises? Is the fan running? You should be able to hear the fan. If not, then your fan is not working properly.
Next, lift the access panel off the furnace, there should be a listing of fault codes. If you can determine what the possible problem is based on those codes, you can help us establish the proper course of action. This step can save you the time and money of our technicians having to come to your home and fix a problem that you might be able to fix yourself. |

What is a heat pump? Are they better than an air conditioner?
In the summer, a heat pump is no different than an air conditioner. In the winter, a heat pump operates in reverse and heats the indoors. A common complaint about heat pumps is that the air coming out of the registers is not hot enough. Heat pumps need auxiliary heat (electric resistance heat or gas furnace) to help them when it is extremely cold or when the thermostat is moved more than 2 degrees at a time. However, here in Texas where the climate is moderate, heat pumps can provide dramatic savings, particularly if you have electric heating. |
How long should my air-conditioning system last?
Typically a heating and cooling system should last 10-12 years. Beyond that, efficiency steadily declines. New, more energy-efficient systems can cut electrical consumption up to 50%, providing substantial savings on your electric or gas bills. Maintenance is a must to maximize efficiency and protect your investment. Be sure to ask your comfort specialist at Montgomery HVAC Service Company, LCC about our annual Preventative Maintenance Plans we provide. |

If I purchase a new HVAC system, am I eligible for an energy efficiency tax credit?
With the passage of President Obama’s Economic Stimulus Bill, homeowners may be eligible for a tax credit if they purchase certain types of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Depending on the type of system or product purchased, it is possible to qualify for a tax credit of up to $1,500 on your 2009 or 2010 income tax return. What is an energy-efficient furnace?
Furnaces are rated with efficiency levels utilizing the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency standard (AFUE). The minimum AFUE number that is required is at least 80, so the higher AFUE number, the better! So, if you have an 85% efficient furnace, it means that for every dollar that is spent to fuel your furnace, 85 cents is used to heat the home while 15 cents is lost. It may not sound like much to lose, but it definitely adds up over time. To learn more about choosing the perfect furnace for your home or business, feel free to tour the products page of this site. We have provided links to American Standard and each one of their heating and cooling products. If you have any further questions or would like to schedule a consultation, please contact Montgomery HVAC Service Company, LLC at 972-442-5171. |

I want a larger air conditioner. A friend told me this is not necessarily good. Is this true?
An air conditioner that is too big will cool your home more quickly, but will not be as energy efficient and will not remove humidity effectively. If your ductwork is not big enough for the “oversized” unit, the coil may freeze and the system won’t work at all. At Montgomery HVAC Service Company, LLC our licensed and expertly trained HVAC specialists will recommend a system that has been custom-designed to the needs of your home and your comfort needs. |
How often should I schedule a maintenance check on my air conditioner?
In Texas, you should have an annual check-up completed on your system at least twice a year. Our technicians at Montgomery HVAC Service Company, LLC will perform two visits per year to ensure maximum performance year-round. Your air conditioner needs regular maintenance to keep it operating properly, efficiently, and safely. As a preventative maintenance customer, we take the hassle out of remembering to take care of your air conditioner. We contact you twice a year to schedule the necessary maintenance for your system. And in addition, you’re eligible for discounts on any needed service or new equipment. Call us today at 972-442-5171 for complete information. |

Should I set my thermostat fan to "ON" or "AUTO"? |
Most people, prefer the "AUTO" setting. When set on AUTO, the fan comes on to circulate the air when the system comes on (either heat or cool). However, people with respiratory problems, it may benefit to set the thermostat on the ON position so that the air is continuously being circulated and cleaned through the filter. The system is more energy efficient when set on AUTO. |
How often should I check my filter? |
It’s a good idea to check your air filters monthly, and clean or replace them as needed. A good tip for remembering is to check it each month when your electric bill arrives. Cleaning or replacing your filter routinely will reduce energy usage, and save you money! They also help prolong the life of your system. |

Why is the R-22 refrigerant being phased to 410? |
Under the Clean Air Act, the R-22 refrigerant is being phased to the 410 to create better environmental alternatives and decrease the rapid depletion of the ozone layer of our earths surface. As a consumer one should know that at this time it is NOT required to change out your R-22 units. However, if you are installing a new system in your home, the much more eco-friendly 410 refrigerant will be a part of the new system. |
